Alphabet Karen Huang & Susan Kooi (bookshop)

Now on display | Till 12 July 2026

Alfabet SK

In the bookshop of Huis van het boek, the complete ceramic alphabet by Susan Kooi and Karen Huang is now on display as a full series for the first time. Their alphabet enters into a direct dialogue with the history of the handwritten and illuminated book.

Susan Kooi and Karen Huang present a ceramic alphabet based on letterforms from medieval manuscripts. Each letter is built as a small sculptural world populated by figures and alien characters, featuring swords, roses, demons, unicorns, mermaids, flutes and trees. The project began in 2019 with the series LUCA (Last Universal Common Ancestor), shown at Billytown the Kitchen. During the finissage, the full alphabet was shown briefly for the first time. At Huis van het Boek, the complete ceramic alphabet is now presented for the first time as a full series, in direct dialogue with the history of handwritten and decorated books.

Susan Kooi (NL) is a visual artist and graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. In her work, she combines her interest in storytelling with the use of tactile materials such as ceramics, textiles, and plastic. She explores how objects can carry meaning, not only through their form or function, but also through the stories attached to them.
